International Students SAFETYCard is the national safety program of National Liaison Committee (NLC), the national peak body for International Students in Australia, jointly supported by Australian Police and Multicultural Community to create the national safety network for International Students Community.

SAFETYCard is administered by NLC and distributed by NLCampus Representatives and International Students Clubs affiliated under the SAFETYCard program. All International Students are entitled to apply for membership free of charge.

SAFETYCard Key Features

1. Calling SAFETYCard Hotline

For emergency incidents, SAFETYCard members are encouraged to call Police (000) first, then call our SAFETYCard Hotline to file a safety incident report. Other non-emergency safety related incidents are dealt with by our NLCounsellors. All safety incidents are followed up with relevant Local Area Command and Consulate for proper investigation and consular protection.

2. Identifying SAFETYCard Member

SAFETYCard number is a unique 13-digit barcode by GS1 Australia assigned to identify each member. By quoting SAFETYCard number when reporting a safety related incident, the data will be shared by NLC with the Police to identify troubled spots on and off campus, and improve the overall safety of NLCommunity.

3. Addressing Under-reporting

Police has indicated there are under-reporting of crimes committed against International Students because of language & cultural barriers. By using safety reporting services, members are assured that their safety reports are treated with respect & given proper attention.

4. Following Up Incident

Safety incident report is assigned to one of our NLCounsellors who are responsible for liaising with the relevant Local Area Command where the safety incident was reported. Safety incident reports are followed up until there is a resolution for the affected member.

5. Making External Referral

NLCounsellors determine the level of assistance and support required by affected members, and make referral to external agency for further action. Affected members can have access to specialist services provided by the government agencies & Multicultural Community.
